At the conference, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Hugh Borrowman said that human resource development is part of key co-operation between Australia and Vietnam.

He stated that Australia has focused on reforming tertiary and postgraduate education, with these projects receiving aid from the Australian government, marking the transition towards strengthening co-operation in improving vocational training. He also recognised the importance of co-operation activities in Vietnam’s future development.

Deputy Head of the General Department of Vocational Training under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Cao Van Sam said that workers who are not skilled or low-skilled, make a big impact on labour productivity and income, as well as production and business efficiency of enterprises.

He affirmed that Vietnam has developed a national vocational training strategy up to 2020, with a vision to 2030. The strategy refers to a range of solutions, which focus on internal resource development and international co-operation.

Experts from government agencies, businesses and vocational training institutions discussed the priorities, challenges and strategies to encourage enterprises’ participation in the reform of vocational training in Vietnam.

A central goal of the Australia-support project ‘Vocational training reform’ is to share experiences from Australia on how to better connect education and vocational training systems with the business community to facilitate training activities to meet the needs of enterprises. This is also considered an important factor to enhance economic growth and productivity in Vietnam and ASEAN in general.

According to the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, the Australian government is providing AUD$1 million for the ‘Vocational training reform’ project to help build capacity by developing vocational standards through expertise sharing between Australia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
