The construction of the system started in March 2013 in Hung Le commune, Giong Trom district with a total investment of nearly VND150 billion (US$6.8 million).

It was built to help local residents develop sustainable crop production and cultivation models.

The system is an important part of the Bac Ben Tre irrigation project, which is designed to prevent and control salt-water intrusion on 140,000 hectares of land in northern Ben Tre, including over 100,000 hectares of farmland, while providing freshwater to hundreds of thousands of households there.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Mekong river delta region and Ben Tre province in particular are facing many challenges and risks related to water resources management caused by climate change and sea level rise.

Many irrigation projects have been started in Ben Tre province in recent years, contributing to addressing the problems, benefiting the lives of local residents and facilitating socio-economic development in the province.
