International Co-operative Day celebrated in Vietnam

Vietnam marked the 93rd International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) International Co-operative Day and 21st United Nations International Co-operative Day in Hanoi on July 4.

Themed “Chose Co-operative, Chose Equality”, this Day’s message is to promote equality among participants in a co-operative.

Vice President of the Vietnam Co-operative Alliance Hoang Van Thinh, said the co-operative economic sector has developed significantly in Vietnam thanks to attention from the Party, State, National Assembly and government.

Vietnam is now home to nearly 20,000 co-operatives operating in almost all sectors and fields, and attracting around 12 million member households, individuals, small business and production establishments.

Co-operatives have actively participated in poverty reduction and new-style rural area building, and in creating jobs for people, especially those in rural areas.

Philip Hanzen, International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s representative, spoke of co-operation between ILO and the Vietnam Co-operative Alliance, particularly in implementing the Vietnam Labour Code and Co-operative Law.

He expressed his hope that the two sides would further collaboration for better results in the time ahead.
