Massive parade marks 70th anniversary of National Day

A massive military parade with the participation of around 30,000 people was held in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square on September 2 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

Attending the event were General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; former General Secretaries Le Kha Phieu and Nong Duc Manh; President Truong Tan Sang, former State Presidents Le Duc Anh, Tran Duc Luong, and Nguyen Minh Triet; Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung; former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai; former National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An; President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan; and Politburo member and Secretary of Hanoi municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi; along with senior officials.

A Lao PDR delegation led by Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee Bounnhang Volachit, along with a delegation of the Royal Government of Cambodia led by Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister and member of the Standing Committee of the Cambodian People's Party Central Committee Men Sam An, were among foreign guests at the event.

Representatives of war veterans, heroic Vietnamese mothers, representatives of overseas Vietnamese communities, local and foreign press, local residents, and representatives of diplomatic corps and international organisations in Vietnam, were also in attendance.

Opening the ceremony, a torch symbolising the vitality of the people of Vietnam was brought from the Ho Chi Minh Museum to the historic Ba Dinh Square by outstanding athletes, before being lit during the celebration.

Following the flag-raising ceremony, a 21-gun salute was fired from the Thang Long Royal Citadel to celebrate the nation’s important anniversary.

On behalf of the Party and State, President Truong Tan Sang delivered a speech celebrating the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

Following the President’s speech, Lieutenant General Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, ran the parade involving representatives from armed forces and various civilians such as war veterans, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, youth, and ethnic groups. The march was broadcast live on Vietnam’s TV channels.

On the same day, fireworks displays will begin at 9pm in five locations across Hanoi, including Hoan Kiem Lake, Thong Nhat Park, Van Quan Lake, My Dinh Stadium, and West Lake, as well as at the Thu Thiem tunnel crossing Sai Gon River and Dam Sen cultural park in Ho Chi Minh City.
