According to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic in 1968, which took effect in Vietnam on August 20, 2015, the international driver license is valid in the 85 countries around the world that are party to the convention.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the first two cities to pilot the project.

To obtain an international license, Vietnamese nationals, or foreigners with residential cards in Vietnam, must fill out an application and bring along their current driver license and passport to an authorised Vietnamese agency to complete the procedure.

The fee for each application is VND 150,000. The applicant will be able to obtain their international driving license within five days after their application is submitted.

The international driving permits are available in English, French, Russian and Spanish and the language of the host country.
