The Deputy PM made the request while addressing a meeting in Hanoi on June 16 to mark the Action Month for Drug Prevention and Control.

The meeting, co-organised by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, also saw the attendance of MPS Deputy Minister – Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pratibha Mehta.

The Government official stressed that the fight against drugs always receives special attention from the Party and Government, as well as enthusiastic response from sectors and people from all walks of life.

However, drug trafficking and the illegal use of drugs continue in the country, thus causing multifaceted consequences to the socio-economic situation and national growth.

To keep younger generations away from drugs, the Deputy PM asked the MOET to take responsibility to ensure that students from elementary to tertiary education are provided and updated with knowledge on drug prevention and control, he said.

He demanded the MPS speed up the struggle against use and trafficking, particularly those operating around school areas, in order to create a healthy learning environment for students.

The Ministry of Information and Communications was requested to tighten its management of websites which entice adolescents to try drugs and impose strict punishments on violations.

It is also the responsibility of authorities and all levels, press agencies, schools and parents to discuss the dangers of drugs to the youth and prevent them from trying drugs, he emphasised.
