He urged the facility to build strong research groups while developing a number of major sciences, including computing, renewable energy, environment and maritime technology, thus enabling technology transfers and dealing with issues related to the environment, green growth and climate change.
Speaking at a ceremony on November 12 to mark the university’s 60th anniversary, he asked the university to further improve the quality of education to enhance the quality of the country’s human resources and meet the requirements of the labour market.
It is crucial to design policies to attract high-profile lecturers while expanding external relations and creating favourable conditions in which for scientists to conduct research, he said.
Meanwhile, the university should also pay attention to building pure and strong Party organisations, increasing political awareness for students, lecturers and officials.
He requested that other ministries, sectors and local administrations support the university in promoting its role as Vietnam’s leading research university in the fundamental sciences, and entering the top 100 Asian universities in 2020 and reaching Asian standards for a number of areas in 2030.
The University of Natural Sciences at the Hanoi National University, formerly known as Hanoi University, was established in 1956 as the first university offering fundamental science courses in northern Vietnam, with a first class of 430 students. Prof. Nguy Nhu Kon Tum was the first headmaster of the university.
On December 10, 1993, the university was named the University of Natural Sciences and put under the management of Hanoi National University. It was the first facility in the country to offer programmes for the high school, postgraduate, Master’s and PhD levels, as well as special Bachelor’s science courses for talented students.
The facility has made excellent achievements during its 60 years of operation, significantly contributing to the development of education in the country, as well as the national construction and defence.
As a top facility for training in the fundamental sciences, the university has announced more than 200 pieces of scientific research each year for prestigious international science magazines, including Nature Magazine.
At the ceremony, President Tran Dai Quang presented the Ho Chi Minh Order to the university. This is the second time the facility has been honoured with the noble order.
