Mai, who is also Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, hailed the teachers as bright examples of the national education and training sector.

The Party and State always give top priority to the cause of education and training and provide preferential policies for disadvantaged regions, aiming to bring real equality and fairness to the people and officials, including teachers, working there, she said.

The Politburo member asked levels, sectors, organisations and individuals to pay continuous care and support to the teachers and students in remote and isolated areas and border and island localities.

She highlighted the significance of the programme in encouraging and paying tribute to the teachers voluntarily working in disadvantaged localities, as well as raising the responsibilities of the entire society, particularly the youth, in bringing knowledge to children of ethnic minorities in remote and isolated areas.

The programme, entitled “Sharing teachers’ sufferings”, honoured 42 exemplary teachers working in island communes across the country, including 25 females and 17 males. The oldest teacher was Phan Hong Anh, 54, from Phuoc The Secondary School in Binh Thuan province’s Tuy Phong district, while the youngest was Quang Thi Thuy Ngan, 25, from Thanh An Kindergarten in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyen Thi Hoi, a 50-year-old female teacher of the Ban Sen Secondary School in Quang Ninh province’s Van Don district, had the longest period of time working on islands: 29 years and seven months.

Each of the honourees was presented with a certificate of merit from the Vietnam Youth Federation Central Committee, an insignia as well as a savings book worth VND10 million (US$450).

On par with the programme’s activities, the organising committee launched an online writing contest on sea and island teachers and received more than 150 entries from every corner of the nation expressing deep sentiments from generations of students to their teachers.
