The event was attended by Hoang Trung Hai, Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, and Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee.

Addressing the ceremony, Chung extended his deep thanks to the teachers and educational managers for their enthusiasm and dedication to the cause of training highly qualified human resources for the country.

He encouraged the teachers to unite and overcome difficulties to become “meritorious educators” in the hearts of students and parents.

The capital’s education and training sector needs to focus on intensively and extensively implementing its tasks in the spirit of the Party’s Resolution No. 29-NQ/TƯ on fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education; drastically renovate the high school education programmes, as well as methods of instruction and study employed at schools; perform vocational guidance work for high school students well; and improve the quality of foreign language teaching, particularly English language, the municipal leader said.

He hailed high school education as a basic level of education, insisting on appropriate teaching programmes aiming to both help form the personality and conduct of citizens and to ensure the modernity and the comprehensive development of the arts, music and physical education.

As reported, the scale of Hanoi’s education has seen strong growth in 2016 with over 2,600 educational institutions, more than 1.7 million students and nearly 134,000 officials, teachers and workers. The city currently has thirteen schools recognised as being of high quality and 1,135 meeting national standards.

Hanoian students have also performed brilliantly at both national and international contests, leading the recent national contest for the gifted with 147 prizes and winning ten regional and international Olympiad medals at the high school level.
