The two sides agreed to maintain annual meetings at all levels while enhancing links in research, surveys, technical assistance and training related to the field with the aim of effectively combating drug crime.
They also underlined the need to promote the role played by the Border Liaison Office of each country in ensuring security and order in border areas.
As drug crime, especially cross-border drug trafficking, is seeing complicated growth, the countries committed to redoubling their efforts to give top priority to making a drug-free post-2015 ASEAN a reality.
They also agreed on priorities in taking measures to deal with the illegal drug trade and the cross-border transport of drugs and conducting joint patrols along the shared border to control drug crime.
Propaganda campaigns to raise public awareness of the dangers of drugs crime, especially in border areas, will be launched, contributing to building border areas of peace and friendship.
Despite joint efforts between the anti-drug forces of Vietnam and Cambodia, cross-border drug crime has grown complicated in recent years. Heroin, synthetic drugs and addictive substances are trafficked from Cambodia to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City through small-scale border trade and inland waterways.
Traffickers also use Vietnam as a transit point through which for drugs to be shipped to other countries. Meanwhile, some international trafficking rings also operate across the Vietnam-Cambodia border.
