Ministries target vocational training for 5.5 million rural workers

As many as 5.5 million rural workers will receive vocational training in the 2016-2020 period, participants heard at a national conference on vocational training held in Hanoi on March 23.

The event was co-organised by the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The benefiting workers will include 1.4 million studying agricultural skills and 4.1 others receiving training on non-agricultural occupations.

A total of 3.84 million of them will undergo a three-month primary vocational training programme with a guarantee that 80% of the trainees will acquire stable jobs or be capable of earning higher income in their current jobs after the conclusion of the course.

The training cost is estimated at VND 12.6 trillion (US$552.7 million). Of this, VND 7.746 trillion (US$340 million) is to be allocated from the State budget and the remaining funds will come from local authorities in addition to other sources.

The project aims to enhance vocational training quality while creating more jobs and improving income for rural workers.

In the 2010-2016 period, the project benefited more than 5 million rural workers. It also helped in raising awareness of the community and participants in particular on vocational training and contributing to reducing poverty in rural areas.
