Party, parliament leaders donate to support storm victims

Party and National Assembly leaders joined people nationwide in donating money to buy relief for victims of storm Doksuri in the central region.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former Party General Secretaries Le Kha Phieu and Nong Duc Manh, and staff of the Party Central Committee’s Office contributed over VND400 million (US$17,600) to the fund on September 20.

The same day, the trade union of the National Assembly (NA) Office also launched a fund raising campaign for storm-hit areas. NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and many officials from the NA Office have responded to the campaign.

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) also called on its officials and labourers nationwide to support the storm victims.

Nearly VND100 million (US$4,400) was raised from the VGCL’s staff on the day the call was issued.

VGCL Standing Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Hai also launched a text message campaign to support the storm affected people. By texting “BL” to 1407, an individual can donate VND 20,000 to residents in storm-hit areas.

Doksuri, the strongest storm that has struck Vietnam in many years, claimed nine lives and left four missing and 112 injured, according to reports from affected localities by 10pm on September 16.
