Energy Career Scholarship granted to outstanding students

As many as 20 outstanding students majoring in power and energy at Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Electric Power University (EPU) were granted the AES-VCM Energy Career Scholarship, on September 27, to facilitate their studies in the field of energy.

Launched by the AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd., in cooperation with the Centre for Education Development, the scholarship is offered to students from the northern province of Quang Ninh who are studying power and energy at the two universities.

It is one of the company’s initiatives to invest in education, training and prepare a high-tech workforce for Quang Ninh in particular and the Vietnamese energy sector in general.

Besides the US$600 financial support, each student will be able to benefit from participating in soft skills and English training, volunteer activities, community support and field visits to Mong Duong 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant, invested in and operated by AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd.

Addressing the Ceremony, David Stone, Managing Director of AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Company, said that developing high-tech manpower from the local workforce is one objective of the sustainable development goal that the AES and its partners are pursuing in Vietnam.

The scholarships and soft-skills training offered to the outstanding students will facilitate them in their learning and further improve their personal development to become the foundation of the Vietnamese energy sector in the future, he added.

Le Trung Son, a senior thermoelectric major, Department of Energy Technology at the EPU, shared that the AES-VCM Energy Career Scholarship not only provides financial support but also the soft-skills to equip him for his future career and advance him towards his dream career.

Besides this scholarship, the AES-VCM Company have also implemented a range of corporate social responsibility programmes aimed towards the improvement of education, healthcare and the environment for the last six years with total value of over VND7 billion.

AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd is the owner of Mong Duong 2 BOT Power Plant located at Mong Duong ward, Cam Pha city, Quang Ninh province. Ground breaking in December 2010, the US$2.1 billion plant has a gross capacity of 1,242 MW with two units. Since the date of synchronisation in April 2015, both units have contributed more than 12 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid and it is expected to contribute more than 7.6 billion kWh of electricity to the national power grid annually.
