Southern localities brace for Storm Tembin

Southern localities are focusing all forces and means to cope with Tembin, a dangerous Storm which is approaching the southern coastal line.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), Tembin will lash Con Dao Island on December 25 afternoon and make landfall in the coastal area from Ba Ria-Vung Tau to Ca Mau provinces in the evening of same day, sustaining wind speeds of 118-133 kph.

Amidst the development of Tembin, the 16th storm affect Vietnam this year, on Monday Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung arrived Tran De district, Soc Trang province to inspect the storm response work there.

Soc Trang People's Committee Chairman Tran Van Chuyen said that all the preparations were carried out quickly, with detailed plans and specific tasks to respond to unexpected situations. The work of moving people out of the storm’s trajectory has been completed.

Inspecting the storm prevention in Tran De port and along the Hau River in complicated weather with heavy rain and strong wind, Deputy PM Dung urged for removing small fishing vessels anchoring along the river shore to avoid damages when the storm makes landfall.

Dung stressed that at all costs, it is a must to ensure the safety of life and property for local people, deploy forces to help locals consolidate their homes and continue to keep a close watch on Tembin to minimise the damage caused by the storm.

Working with Kien Giang province the same day, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong urged the local authorities and people not to be negligent as Tembin is a particularly complicated and dangerous storm.

In addition, attention should be paid to the evacuation work to keep local people and tourists aware of the strict enforcement on the ban of Kien Giang province concerning the transportation at sea, especially in Phu Quoc Island. The province should focus on helping people quickly harvest rice crops.

According to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue under the Border Guard Command, a total of 69,121 vessels with 343,169 people on board has been guided to safe harbor and provided with information on the direction of the storm to take preventive actions.

In order to positively respond to the storm, 15 out of 19 provinces and cities in the South have planned to relocate over 1.1 million people. As of this morning, ten localities finished the evacuation work. Along with the displacement, the strengthening activities for houses are actively implemented by local authorities.

The Ministry of Education and Training urged its local departments, based on the actual situation, to let student off schools for two days from December 25-26 to ensure their safety.
