Heavy rain causes flooding in central localities

Heavy rain brought by a strengthened cold spell from the North have caused flooding in multiple central provinces in recent days.

In Nghe An province, heavy rain lasted from Friday night to Saturday noon causing substantial flooding in Vinh city. Most of the streets in the city were under 50-70 cm of water, halting traffic. At Vinh market, booths were submerged in water and Vinh city’s police have mobilised forces to support traders to transport goods and property to high positions. Several flights to Vinh Airport have been cancelled.

On December 8, Nghe An provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control sent an emergency dispatch to the relevant units in the province to regularly monitor and update the development of rains and floods to actively cope with and ensure the safety for local people. Local authorities were urged to inspect the safety of irrigation works and implement measures to protect dykes, dams and works under construction, while actively preventing flooding in urban areas.

According to the initial reports, as of 1pm yesterday, heavy rain had inundated 730 houses and 1,419.2 ha of maize and vegetables in Nghe An, along with the flooding of 229.4 ha aquaculture ponds.

Quang Tri province also suffered from heavy rain since late Saturday, with rainfall up to 188.4 mm in Dong Ha city, causing large scale flooding that inundated houses under 0.5-1 m of water in Dong Ha’s Le Loi street. Floods also washed away two people residing in Dong Le ward, Dong Ha city. Their bodies were found later the same day. Ha Loc dyke in Trieu Phong district was broken with damage stretching 200 m along the dyke. More than 7.5 ha of freshwater aquariums in Gio Linh district were flooded, while Vinh Linh district lost over 120 tonnes of fish due to water overflowing.

Heavy rain up to 155 mm from midnight to Sunday morning has inundated a range of areas in Da Nang city, with flood water up to nearly 1m.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, since early this morning, due to the effect of cold air combined with wind convergence, provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue will continue to suffer from rain, with rainfall ranging from 23-50mm.
