Labour Confederation urged to fulfil its role in protecting workers’ rights

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour should focus on studying the negative impacts of new trade deals to workers in order to develop suitable responsive measures to protect their legitimate rights.

Politburo member Truong Thi Mai made the suggestion during the second Presidium Conference of the 12th Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, which opened in Hanoi on January 14.

Speaking at the opening of the two-day event, Politburo member Mai, who is also Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, praised the results achieved in 2018 by the Vietnam’s trade union organisations in organising the 12th Vietnam National Trade Union Congress and actively participating in the process of Vietnam's participation in new trade agreements.

She also spoke highly of the trade unions’ efforts in fulfilling their duty to represent, care for and protect the legitimate rights and interests of workers, while strengthening the dialogues between workers and employers and participating in the process of research, amendments, supplements and the implementation of policies to support employees.

These activities have contributed to affirming the position and role of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour - one of the leading socio-political organisations in innovation of operating modes, Mai affirmed.

Regarding the challenges when Vietnam joins the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), she urged trade unions to study the impact of the trade deal to timely provide information to the unions, while building specific roadmaps and programmes for trade union’s operations in the next 4-5 years, with a focus on businesses and organising training for trade union officials on negotiations, the conclusion of collective labour agreements and labour contracts.
