The ceremony also announced "Vietnam's commitments to implementing traffic accidents reduction goals of the United Nations".
With the message "Safe transportation, thousands of lives saved", the event encouraged the community to follow the 12 Golden Rules of FIA when participating in traffic, contributing to raising awareness of obeying the Road Traffic Law, thereby preventing accidents and reducing casualties caused by traffic accidents.
The ceremony saw the participation of Standing Deputy Prime Minister cum head of the NTSC Truong Hoa Binh, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The, and FIA Chairman Jean Todt, in addition to 3,000 local people.
Launched by FIA in 2017, the global-scale campaign aims to raise people's awareness of the importance of road traffic safety. The campaign also represents part of the FIA's commitment to fulfilling the UN's sustainable goal of halving fatalities caused by traffic accidents until 2020.
Deputy PM Binh appreciated the significance of the global campaign, noting that Vietnam has developed practical measures to reduce the number of traffic accidents and fatalities.
He added that it is an honour for Vietnam to be the representative of Asia to launch the campaign to voluntarily implement the UN's traffic accident reduction goals.
FIA Chairman Jean Todt expressed his expectation that the traffic safety issue in Vietnam will receive more attention through the country's official participation in the campaign.
At the ceremony, Jean Todt granted a certificate of commitment to support Vietnam in implementing UN traffic safety targets to the Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The.
Jean Todt will be present in five other countries representing five continents to receive their commitments on traffic safety goals and directly report to the UN General Assembly at the third global ministerial meeting on road safety scheduled for February 2020, in Sweden.
