Vietnamese scholars awarded French accolade

Ngo Tu Lap, Director of the International Francophone Institute and Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Van Minh, Senior Lecturer at Hanoi National University, were awarded the title of “Knight of Arts and Letters” and “The Order of Academic Palms” by the French Government at a ceremony in Hanoi on October 23.

Under the framework of the International Forum "Franconomics" held at the French Cultural Centre, L'Espace, Hanoi, Nicolas Warnery, French Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Vietnam, presented the awards to Vietnamese scholars for their contributions.

The “Knight of Arts and Letters” title was established in 1957 by the French minister of culture, and its national merit status was confirmed by French President Charles de Gaulle in 1963.

The title is bestowed upon people in recognition of their outstanding achievements or great contributions to the art and literature of France and the world.

Ngo Tu Lap has published more than 20 books, including four short books, two collections of poems, five essay books and numerous translations of French, Russian and English. Winner of numerous awards including the nomination of the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for his collection “Black Star”.

Some of his collections and articles were published in France.

Under his leadership, the International Francophone Institute has developed strongly, becoming a multidisciplinary research and training centre, closely connected with French university institutions.

The institute is appreciated as the highest level of internationalization in Vietnam, with students from more than two dozen countries.

IFI has become a Francophone center in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Order of Academic Palms, established in the early 19th century, is a noble decoration that the French Government bestows upon distinguished persons in the fields of education, science, culture, and arts.

The current Order is established by the decree of October 4, 1955. Decisions of promotion and appointment in the Order are made by decree of the Prime Minister on proposal of the Minister of National Education.

Professor Trinh Van Minh has published numerous books and articles on French language teaching, training teacher of the French language in Vietnam and across the world.
