The storm made landfall on Vietnam’s south central coast in the early hours of October 31, bringing strong winds and heavy rains before weakening to a low-pressure area.
No human losses have been reported but Matmo caused damage at a boat shelter area at Quy Nhon Port in Binh Dinh province, it devastated houses among other buildings, knocked down trees and cut off electricity where it swept through.
According to the national disaster management agency, about 900,000 households across Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen were left without power in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Matmo. Power has been restored to 150,000 households.
Deputy PM Dung said at meeting with leaders of Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa provinces that they are not allowed to be complacent when coping with natural disasters.
According the national weather service, the storm has weakened but its remnants will cause heavy rains in the region. They advised local authorities to evacuate people from areas prone to flash floods and landslides.
Landslide warnings have been issued for mountainous areas in the provinces from Ha Tinh to Phu Yen and the Central Highlands while serious flooding could hit low-lying, waterfront and urban areas from Thua Thien-Hue to Phu Yen.
The agency also warned of further dangerous weather events in the time ahead, calling for close monitoring in order to take prompt action.
