Central Vietnam warned of low-pressure area and prolonged rainfall

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has notified the coastal localities from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan and the Central Highlands, as well as other relevant authorities on coping with a low pressure and dangerous weather in the East Sea and the Central region.

According to the national weather service, a reported low-pressure area in the middle of the East Sea is progressing and slowly moving westward. It is likely to grow stronger in the next days, while bringing heavy rains, thunderstorms and rough waters to the East Sea (including Vietnam’s Paracel and Spratly archipelagos) and the waters off the Central, South-Central and Southern provinces.

In the next 10 days, the Central region is likely to experience consecutive heavy rains accompanied by floods on a large scale, occurring in Central and South Central and then expanding to the North Central provinces.

In order to proactively cope with the likely stronger low-pressure area and floods in the Central provinces, the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee on Disaster Prevention and Control urged the concerned ministries, localities and agencies to closely monitor the update on movements of the low-pressure area, while notifying and instructing vessels and aquacultural farms at sea in the low-pressure area to take initiative measures.

They are required to maintain continuous communications in order to promptly handle possible bad situations, as well as review plans to cope with floods, especially in areas at risk of flash floods and landslides to ensure safety for people's lives and property.

Strengthening the safety of reservoirs is also another urgent task, coupled with closely monitoring flow changes to have appropriate regulation to ensure safety for works and downstream areas, while preparing forces and means to serve in the rescue work upon request.
