Major General Nguyen Hong Son, Director of Military Hospital 175, told reporters at the inauguration that the hospital was assigned by the Ministry of Defence to take care of the health of soldiers and islanders on Vietnam’s Truong Sa.

The Ho Chi Minh City-based facility regularly receives patients during emergency cases transferred from Truong Sa to the mainland for treatment, Son informed, as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

Previously, patients was transferred by air ambulance helicopters to Tan Son Nhat airport, then was taken by ambulances run by Military Hospital 175 to treat them at the medical facility. The emergency route made it difficult for both patients and medical staff as they have to travel a lot, thereby reducing the success rates of first aids.

Therefore, the operation of the emergency airfield has facilitated the hospital's determination to carry out its duties and created favourable conditions for promoting its capabilities in assisting in medical incidents and giving first aids and rescue work, Son said.

On Friday morning, the 370th Division under the Air Force - Air Defence ran a pilot air ambulance flight, using Mi171 helicopter No. 04 under the 917 Regiment of the 370th Division. The helicopter took off and landed successfully at the helipad located on top of the hospital’s Orthopaedic Trauma Department building.

In addition to serving emergency transport for soldiers and people in accidents in Truong Sa, the helicopter emergency airport at Military Hospital 175 will also offer a responsive emergency service for medical incidents to ensure good health for officials and residents in Ho Chi Minh City and neighbouring localities.
