PM praises military officers’ heroic sacrifice in rescue mission

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has spoken highly of the ten military officers from the 4th Military Region killed during a rescue mission at a hydropower plant in the central province of Thua Thien Hue.

During a brief visit to the headquarters of the military region on October 16, he said it is a great loss to the 4th Military Region and asked its leaders to hold a solemn funeral for the officers and take care of their families.

He also asked the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs and local authorities to honour them in an appropriate manner.

The ten officers who perished were part of a rescue mission dispatched to the Rao Trang 3 hydropower plant on October 12 to search for 17 construction workers who had were missing due to flash floods.

But the members of the mission were struck by landslides themselves the following day. Only eight managed to escape while 13, including three officials of Thua Thien Hue Province, lost contact.

The bodies of the 13 rescuers were fully recovered two days later.

The relevant forces are continuing their efforts to hunt for the missing construction workers.
