The mercury may even drop to below 5C in the high mountains, where ice and frost could appear in the coming days, warned weather forecasters.

In Hanoi, the temperatures at night will average between 12-14C while the highest temperatures will not exceed 22C during daytime.

The weather will be slightly colder at night over the weekend and begin to rise again from next week, according to a forecast by the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Rains and showers are expected to continue in the central provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai.

The NCHMF said the flooding level on the Serepok River in Ban Don in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak is expected to reach its peak on December 3 and will then recede slowly.

Water levels on the rivers across the central region will also begin to fall from the afternoon.

The weather agency has issued warnings of landslides in mountainous areas and flooding in low-lying, riverside and urban areas in the provinces from Thua Thien Hue to Khanh Hoa and the Central Highlands.
