Mai encouraged locals to take care of economic development and strive to thrive in their lives. She also suggested local authorities pay attention to implementing social welfare and sustainable poverty reduction, as well as organising activities to help local people enjoy a happy and warm Tet.

On the occasion, Mai and her entourage awarded more than 700 Tet gifts to policy families, people who contributed to the revolution, ethnic minority households in difficult circumstances, Da Lat SOS Children's Village and the Social Protection Centre of Lam Dong province.

In the central city of Da Nang, the local Red Cross Society and Hoa Vang district authorities co-hosted a festival on January 8 to offer support for the repair of both the houses and livelihoods of disadvantaged households affected by natural disasters at a total cost of VND200 million.

As part of a programme aiming to support the poor and victims of Agent Orange being implemented until February 8, the Da Nang Red Cross is mobilising 14,000 Tet gifts worth at least VND4.6 billion for local disadvantaged households, policy families, Agent Orange victims, households affected by natural disasters and other vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) on January 8 announced assistance sourced from its trade union funds to support trade unionists and workers facing difficulties during Tet - Vietnam’s biggest traditional festival which falls in mid-February this year.

The VGCL’s Permanent Vice President Tran Thanh Hai said that under the direction of the VGCL, trade unions at all levels plan to organise an early Tet for trade unionists and workers, with a focus on workers encountering difficulties and those unable to return home for Tet or those who must work during the festival.

The confederation is also working on a support package for workers living in extremely disadvantaged circumstances or affected by natural disasters, he said, adding that more than VND4 billion has been set aside by the confederation and the Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverage Joint Stock Corporation (Sabeco) to help those in need during Tet.
