President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on May 2 sent a letter to the family of Nguyen Van Nha, a 23-year-old student from Nghe An Province who sacrificed his life to save three people from drowning, to express his deep condolences.

He requested functional agencies to submit to the State President on awarding Nha the Medal of Courage and recognising him as a martyr in accordance with regulations.

He asked the People’s Committees in the provinces of Thua Thien – Hue and Nghe An, and Hue University to provide support for Nguyen Van Nha’s family.

The same day, representatives from the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union paid visited to the family of Nguyen Van Nha and bestowed him with the Brave Youth Badge for his brave act.

Nguyen Van Nha, from Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province, was a fourth-year student at Hue University. On April 30, he saved three young women from drowning at a beach in Phu Vang District, Thua Thien Hue Province, but he himself was sadly swept away by the seawater due to exhaustion.

Locals and the Thuan An Beach Marine Rescue Team found him at sea on the same day, in critical condition, and he died a few minutes later. His body was brought home to Quynh Yen Commune, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province, for funeral services on May 2.
