Urgent measures required in response to new tropical depression

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on June 12 issued a telegram to the concerned units of northern and coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Binh Dinh urging proactive response measures regarding the new tropical depression which is likely to become a major storm, causing rains and flooding.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the location of the tropical depression was at about 18.3 degrees north latitude and 110.8 degrees east longitude. It was about 480 km from the coast of Ha Tinh, its strongest winds at level 7 and 9.

It is forecast that in the next 24 hours, the tropical depression will move west-northwest at a speed of 15-20 kilomtres per hour and is likely to then become a storm. At 4am on June 13, the storm's position is forecast to be at about 19.9 degrees north latitude and 106.7 degrees east longitude, on the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, with strong winds of levels 8 and 10.

In addition, from the afternoon of June 12 to June 14, the north and areas from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue provinces are likely to suffer heavy rains with total rainfall of 80-150 mm per batch and over 150mm per batch in some places. Meanwhile, the southern region of the Northern Delta as well as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Hoa Binh adn Phu Tho will have rainfall of 150-250mm per batch and over 350mm per batch in some localities. During the thunderstorms, there will be a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong winds.

Under the telegram, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Response and the National Committee for Incident and Disaster Response and Search and Rescue have asked the Commanding Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of coastal provinces and cities to closely monitor changes in the tropical low pressure and notify boats operating at sea.

The delta and coastal localtieis are required to ensure the safety of cages and aquaculture areas and important sea dikes as well as review and prepare for adequate drainage to protect agricultural production, low-lying areas, urban areas and industrial zones.

The concerned units were asked to inspect and review unsafe houses, residential areas along rivers, streams, riverbanks and areas at risk of flooding and landslides so that they prepare plans to evacuate people in high-risk areas to safer places in mountainous localities.

Forces should be arranged to control and guide traffic in flooded areas as well as inspect and ensure the safety of reservoirs and downstream areas.

Localities need to proactively implement COVID-19 prevention and contraol measures in line with their specific situation.

Ministries and agencies will direct measures to respond to all situations and prepare forces and means to rescue as required.

Vietnam Television, the Voice of Vietnam and mass media agencies will enhance communications regarding the development of the tropical depression, the work of directing the response and overcoming the consequences.
