The decision was delivered at the end of an appeal on May 14.
According to court documents, Thang was found to have broken the law when assigning PVC, a unit of PVN, to carry out the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) package at the Thai Binh 2 power plant.
Phung Dinh Thuc, former general director of PVN, had his 9-year sentence reduced by three years, while Vu Duc Thuan, former general director of PVC, was given a total sentence of 21 years, one year less than the sentence imposed by the trial court.
Trinh Xuan Thanh, former chairman of PVC, had earlier withdrawn his appeal.
Several other defendants also had their sentences reduced for fully cooperating with the investigative agency and paying compensation to settle the consequences.
The court rejected the appeal concerning civil obligations and demanded that the defendants pay more than VND119 billion (US$5.2 million) in compensation to PVN.
The appeal of Trinh Hung Cuong, son of Trinh Xuan Thanh, against the seizure of assets, including two houses, a car, savings accounts and securities assets, was also dismissed, to guarantee the execution of the court’s decisions.
