The Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, featuring 339 sets of medals to be awarded across 33 sports. Vietnam will be represented by 18 athletes in 11 sports at the Games.
Sprinter Quach Thi Lan and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang have been chosen to bear the national flag for the Vietnamese delegation at the opening ceremony on July 23.

Earlier, eight members of the swimming, badminton, weightlifting and boxing teams arrived in Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh City to join the contingent to depart for Japan from Noi Bai International Airport.

From July 15 to 17, all members of the Vietnamese Olympic contingent did Real-time PCR tests for SARS-CoV-2 before boarding the flight, at the request of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee.

Due to the complicated developments of the pandemic, upon arriving at Narita International Airport, about 60km from the centre of Tokyo, all members of the Vietnamese contingent have to present COVID-19 negative certificates when tested in Vietnam, and be tested against for the coronavirus.

As Vietnam is in the group of countries with the second highest risk of COVID-19 at Tokyo 2020, the organising committee requires additional daily testing for three days before departure and first three days upon arrival in Japan.

The entire travelling process of participating delegations in Japan will be arranged in a closed manner by the organising committee as soon as they arrive at the airport.
The 18 Vietnamese Olympians at Tokyo 2020 include Thach Kim Tuan, Hoang Thi Duyen (weightlifting), Nguyen Thi Tam, Nguyen Van Duong (boxing), Le Thanh Tung, Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics), Nguyen Huy Hoang, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Nguyen Tien Minh, Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Do Thi Anh Nguyet, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery), Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting), Quach Thi Lan (athletics), Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (taekwondo), Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (judo), and Luong Thi Thao / Dinh Thi Hao (rowing).
Five years ago, Vietnam enjoyed its most successful Olympic journey ever, ranking 45th in the overall Rio Games medal table with one gold and one silver, both won by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.
