Olympics: Kevin Durant leads Team USA to men's basketball gold

Kevin Durant top-scored for Team USA as they beat France 87-82 to claim their fourth straight Olympic men's basketball crown in Tokyo on Saturday (August 7).

The victory was revenge for the defeat at the hands of the French team in the group matches. Kevin Durant was the top scorer for the American side with 29 points, the most of any player on either team.

France took the silver, which is the same colour as their last Olympic basketball medal – from the Sydney Games in 2000.

Canoe sprint: Germany fight back to win men's K4 500m gold

Germany won a spectacular K4 500m gold at Tokyo 2020 on Saturday, beating Spain to the finish line in 1:22.219.

The Spanish team entered the final as favourites, after setting an Olympic best of 1:21.658 in yesterday's (August 6) heats. However, it was the German team, made up of Tom Liebscher, Max Lemke, Ronald Rauhe and Max Rendschmidt, that took the Olympic title after a close-fought race ended with them 0.226 seconds ahead of Spain. Slovakia finished in 1:23.534 to take bronze.

Spain's Saul Craviotto, who has won five Olympic medals in total - two golds, two silver, one bronze - made history in the race, becoming his country's all-time joint-leading medallist at the Games.

Hungary power to third consecutive women's kayak four 500m Olympic title

Hungary put in a domineering performance to win the women's kayak four 500m gold on Saturday, with Danuta Kozak, Tamara Csipes, Anna Karasz, and Dora Bodonyi stroking away from the rest of the field to cross the line in 1:35.463.

The win gave Hungary their third consecutive gold medal in the canoe event. Belarus, who were 0.610 seconds behind, took home the silver, while Poland clinched the bronze in 1:36.445.

Lisa Carrington could not add a fourth medal to her haul from the Olympic Games in Tokyo (she has won three gold) as the New Zealand boat finished in fourth.

Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos storms to gold in men's single 1000m canoe sprint

Brazil's Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos crossed the line first in a thrilling men's single 1000m race to claim the gold medal for Brazil.

The 27-year-old Brazilian athlete was neck and neck with China Liu Hao in the first quarter of the race but broke away in the last 250m and stormed to the finish line first at 4:04.408.

Liu came in second with a time of 4:05.724 behind Queiroz dos Santos. Meanwhile Republic of Moldova's Serghei Tarnovschi came up from behind to overtake France's Adrien Bart in the final second to clinch bronze. This is the first gold medal for Queiroz dos Santos who won three Olympic medals (two silvers and bronze) at his home Games, five years ago in Rio.

Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao dominate to win first-ever canoe sprint women's C2 500m final

China dug deep to win the women's C2 500m final at the Sea Forest Waterway on Saturday, with the pairing of Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao - the 2019 world champions - leading from the front to win the race in an Olympic Best time of 1:55.495, over two seconds faster than the record they had set just a day earlier (August 6, 1:57.870).

Ukraine's pair, Liudmyla Luzan of Ukraine and Anastasiia Chetverikova, came home second in 1:57.499, with the third spot on the podium going to Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Canada and Katie Vincent who ended the race in 1:59.041.

Team Norway's Ander Mol and Christian Sorum became the Olympic champions in men’s beach volleyball after beating ROC's Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy 21-17 21-18 in a thrilling gold medal match at Shiozake Park on August 7.

Qatar's Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan outplayed Latvia's Martin Plavins and Edgar Tocs in two straight sets (21-12 21-18) to take bronze, the first ever Olympic beach volleyball medal for Qatar.
