Olympics: Japan beat Team USA for historic first baseball gold

Hosts Japan won their first Olympic gold medal in baseball as they beat the United States 2-0 in the gold-medal match from the Yokohama Baseball Stadium on August 7 to wrap up the competition.

It was Japan’s second win over the Americans in this Olympic baseball tournament.

Earlier in the day, and also in Yokohama, the Dominican Republic won their first Olympic baseball medal when they beat Republic of Korea 10-6 to take bronze with a late hitting rally after trailing for most of the game.

Athletics: USA win gold in men's 4x400m relay for a record 18th time

The USA closed out the track athletic events at Tokyo 2020 on Saturday (August 7) with a spectacular 18th win in the men’s 4x400m relay at an Olympic Games.

The team raced home 100m ahead of nearest rivals the Netherlands to record a season’s best time of 2:55.70. It was a dream end for the American team at Tokyo 2020.

The Netherlands grabbed silver and a national record in 2:57.18, while Botswana took home bronze and an area record after finishing in 2:57.88.

United States win seventh straight Olympic 4x400m relay gold medal

The United States tightened their grip on the women’s 4x400m, winning their seventh straight Olympic gold medal in the event at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium on August 7.

A star-studded quartet made up of US track icon Allyson Felix, world 400m hurdles record holder Sydney McClaughlin, Athing Mu, and Dalilah Muhammad blazed to victory in a season best 3:16.85.

Running the second leg, Felix won her eighth Olympic gold medal and extended her overall medal tally to 11, underscoring her class and status as the most decorated female track and field Olympian.

The US women were head and shoulders above the rest of the field, with 800m champion Mu leading them home more than three seconds clear of Poland in second place. Jamaica rounded off the podium finishing third in 3:21.24.

ROC's Mariya Lasitskene wins women's high jump gold

ROC's Mariya Lasitskene won the women's high jump gold medal after producing a huge jump of 2.04m in the Olympic final on Saturday.

Lasitskene was the only athlete to clear the mark, with Nicola McDermott of Australia jumping 2.02m to claim silver and Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh taking the third spot on the podium with 2.00m.

In a nail-biting competition that went right down to the wire, Lasitskene wrested the lead from front-runner McDermott to earn the title of Olympic champion - and the first gold by an ROC track and field athlete at the Games.

Chopra goes farthest for men’s javelin gold

Neeraj Chopra of India took home the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw here at the Tokyo Olympic Games with a best effort of 87.58m on the final day of throws at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium.

In his Olympic debut, Chopra became only the second Indian man to claim an Olympic medal in athletics, after Norman Pritchard took the men's 200m (silver) and 200m hurdles (silver) in 1900.

The silver went to Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic (86.67m) and his countryman Vítězslav Veselý took the bronze (85.44m).

Netherlands' Sifan Hassan wins second Tokyo 2020 gold in women's 10,000m final

Sifan Hassan of Team Netherlands won gold in the women's 10,000m in a time of 29:55.32, after a gruelling race saw all but three runners dropped from the front group in the sweltering heat of the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Hassan, who also finished supreme gold in the 5000m and bronze in the 1500m, stormed to victory after beating off the challenge of world-record holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia, who led the race until the final 200 metres. Hassan was followed home by Bahrain's Kalkidan Gezahegne who won silver (29:56.18), while an exhausted Gidey took bronze (30:01.72).

Jakob Ingebrigtsen breaks Olympic record to seal gold in the men's 1500m

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen had a dream start to his Olympic career by beating world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and setting a new record to win the men’s 1500m at Tokyo 2020 on Saturday.

Ingebrigtsen, 20, crossed the line in 3:28.32 to set a new Olympic record. Cheruiyot took silver in 3:29.01. Great Britain’s Josh Kerr set a personal best of 3:29.05 to finish in bronze.

Wrestling: ROC’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev beats American Kyle Snyder to 97kg freestyle gold

The ROC’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev defeated American Kyle Snyder 6-3 in the men’s freestyle 97kg final for the gold medal on Saturday.

Sadulaev led 6-0 in the final minute but Snyder scored two on a takedown and one on a step-out to make it 6-3. Sadulaev managed to hold on to see out the bout.

Cuba’s Reineris Salas defeated Azerbaijan’s Sharif Sharifov for bronze. Salas, 34, had never won a world title or an Olympic medal before, whereas Sharifov, 32, won Olympic gold in the 84kg category at the 2012 London Olympics and earned bronze at 86kg in 2016.

In the other bronze medal match, Italy’s Abraham Canyedo Ruano defeated Turkey’s Suleyman Karadeniz 6-2.

Yui Susaki wins Japan’s fourth women’s wrestling gold medal in freestyle 50kg

Yui Susaki won Japan’s fourth gold medal in women’s wrestling at Tokyo 2020 after China’s Sun Yanan 10-0 in the 50kg freestyle final on August 7. The victory equals the gold medal haul won by the host nation’s women wrestlers at Rio 2016.

The first of the two bronze medal matches was won by Azerbaijan's Mariya Stadnik, who goes into the record books as the first athlete representing her country to collect more than three Olympic medals. Her 10-0 win against Tsogt Ochir was her fourth podium finish in four Olympics: silver at Rio 2016 and London 2012, and bronze at Beijing 2008. The second bronze was awarded to USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt who beat Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 12-1.

Otoguro makes host history with men’s 65kg wrestling gold

Takuto Otoguro became the first men’s wrestler in 25 years to win gold for his host nation, overcoming Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan in the men’s 65kg freestyle final at the Makuhari Messe Hall A on Saturday to take the crown.

Gadzhimurad Rashidov of the ROC Team was all over Iszmail Muszukajev of Hungary to take the edge in the first of the bronze-medal matches. His 5-0 win on the points was enough for one of the two bronze medals on offer. The other Olympic bronze medal awarded on the day went to Bajrang Punia of India, who shutout Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan (8-0).

Volleyball: France win first Olympic medal in thriller

France created history by winning gold in the men's volleyball as they downed ROC 3-2 at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on Saturday (August 7).

Despite being European champions (2015) and two-time Nations League winners (2015 and 2017), France best finish in men's volleyball at the Olympic Games had been an eighth-place finish at Seoul 1988.

Their win at Ariake Arena in a nail-bitting five-setter was France's first Olympic Volleyball medal. The final marked the first time in 21 years two European teams had met in the gold medal match of the men's volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games.

Men’s handball: France win record third Olympic gold medal

France held off a spirited fightback from Denmark to claim a 25-23 victory and, with that, a record third Olympic gold medal in the men’s handball in Tokyo 2020.

The match was a repeat of the Rio 2016 gold-medal match, but instead of Denmark taking the spoils, it was France that got their hands on the prized Olympic gold medal.

Denmark's Mikkel Hansen contributed nine goals to his team's total, and in the process, he finished as the tournament's top scorer on 61 goals. He set a new record for most goals scored in men's handball at a single Olympic Games, surpassing the Republic of Korea's YOON Kyung-shin, who scored 58 in Athens in 2004.

Basketball: Australia Boomers beat Slovenia to earn bronze medal

After a host of fourth-place finishes, Australia finally got their hands on an Olympic medal, beating Slovenia 107-93 to win bronze in the Tokyo 2020 men’s basketball tournament.

The Australia Boomers finished in the dreaded fourth place in Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and, more recently, Rio 2016 before finally getting their breakthrough in Tokyo.

Artistic swimming: ROC continue dominance with gold in team

Team ROC were crowned Olympic champions in the artistic swimming team event with a score of 196.0979 at Tokyo 2020 on August 7.

Performing "Parade of the Planets", ROC came out in a space-themed costume with their free routine featuring plenty of incredible and interesting sections. Their score of 98.8000 was the top mark of the day and came after a strong technical routine score (97.2310) yesterday, where they also topped the standings.

China, who performed last, clinched silver (193.5310) and Ukraine picked up their second bronze medal in artistic swimming - Marta Fiedina and Anastasiya Savchuk won bronze in the duet earlier in the week.

Equestrian: Sweden win dramatic jump off against USA to take showjumping gold

To the musical notes of Mamma Mia, Sweden's trio of riders and horses – Henrik von Exckermann on King Edward, Malin Baryard-Johnsson on Indiana and Peder Fredricson on All In – celebrated winning a dramatic jump off in the team showjumping final at the Equestrian Park on Saturday.

They beat the United States threesome of Laura Kraut on Baloutinue, Jessica Springsteen on Don Juan van de Donkhoeve and McLain Ward on Contagious by just 1.3 seconds in the jump off after all six riders went clear.

European champions Belgium won bronze. Team GB pulled out after recognising they would be unable to challenge for a medal.

Karate: Feryal Abdelaziz becomes first Egyptian woman to win Olympic gold

Feryal Abdelaziz become the first ever woman from Egypt to win an Olympic gold medal after beating Irina Zaretska of Team Azerbaijan in the women's kumite +61kg final at the Nippon Budokan on August 7.

Bronze went to China's Gong Li and Kazakhstan's Sofya Berultseva.

Sajan Ganjzadeh wins men's kumite +75kg after being knocked out in the final

Iran’s Sajan Ganjzadeh won the men’s karate kumite +75kg in dramatic fashion after being knocked out by Saudia Arabia’s Tareg Hamedi.

The 29-year-old, who had been trailing 4-1 in the bout, fell to ground after being knocked out with a kick from Hamedi. Medics rushed on to the mat to treat him and he was stretchered off.

Hamedi, 23, had come out fighting and had soon landed an Ippon and a Yuko before the incident happened. The judges later awarded Ganjzadeh, who is a former world champion, the gold medal by a Hansoku and the match ended with a 4-0 scoreline.

The top 15 NOCs on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal count as of 10.30pm on August 7.
