Party chief chairs press conference after conclusion of 12th Party Congress

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong chaired a press conference with domestic and foreign reporters in Hanoi on January 28, immediately after the conclusion of the 12th National Party Congress.

The press conference was attended by Politburo member and Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Communication and Education Dinh The Huynh; Party Central Committee member, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper, and President of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association Thuan Huu; Party Central Committee member and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan; Party Central Committee member and Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Communication and Education Nguyen The Ky; Party Central Committee member and Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan; Party Central Committee member and Vice Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission on Organisation Mai Van Chinh; Party Central Committee member and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung; and Party Central Committee member and Deputy Head of the Office of the Party Central Committee Le Quang Vinh.

Addressing the press conference, the Party leader, who was once also worked as a journalist, thanked the press and praised journalists for their hard work during the Congress. He said that the 12th Party Congress is a special important political event in the context of many changes in the world and many new arising opportunities for the country.

He noted that the last tenure witnessed many innovations including the Resolution on Party-building adopted at the fourth plenum of the 11th Party Central Committee and the first ever held votes of confidence which facilitated the personnel work for the 12th National Party Congress.

The Party chief cited that the Party Central Committee has elected all 19 members to the Politburo, all with concentrated votes. The Congress also elected 180 official and 20 alternate members to the Party Central Committee with high votes.

Being re-elected as the top leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Party chief Trong said that "I would like to express my sincere thanks to the people who have assigned us with noble tasks. I am aware of the great responsibility as well as tremendous opportunities and challenges. There remains much work to be done for our future."

Answering questions on the results of the election of the 12th Party Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Secretariat, the Party chief said that the election results were in accordance with the orientations on personnel work. Selected candidates were introduced by the 11th Party Central Committee and the Congress and the withdrawal of nominees was also reported to the Congress. According to the regulations, the Presidium considered the withdrawal and the Congress decided the result by casting the ballot. Thus, both recommendations from the 11th Party Central Committee and the Congress were collected. This Congress demonstrated the spirit of democracy, solidarity, discipline and intelligence, the General Secretary added.

Regarding the question on the Q&A sessions in the 12th Party tenure, the Party leader said that the conduction of Q&A sessions is a form of democracy aiming to examine the activities of Party leaders. After Q&A sessions, many questions were addressed and the relationships between comrades will be enhanced.

He cited that in the future, it is necessary to pay due attention to central-level strategic personnel planning, particularly among young cadres. In the current tenure, the Politburo has been rejuvenated with the youngest member born in 1970. The Politburo also includes three female members, demonstrating gender equality, Party General Secretary Trong emphasised.

Answering AFP correspondents, the Party chief said that the leadership principle of the Party is to promote the role of collective leadership aligned with promoting individual responsibility. He added that the long-term goal of the Congress is to build Vietnam into a prosperous people along with a democratic, fair and civilised society, in the foreseeable future the target of the Party is to develop Vietnam into a modern industrialised country.

In the afternoon of January 28 in Hanoi, the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations announced the results of the 12th National Party Congress to diplomatic corps and international organisations in Vietnam. The meeting saw the presence of leaders of Party Central Committee's Commissions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; ambassadors, charge d'affaires and representatives of international organisations in Hanoi and press agencies.

Party Central Committee member and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan briefed delegates on the developments and results of the Congress, saying that the Congress wrapped up successfully after eight working days, completing all items on the set agenda and meeting all set targets.

Quan noted that the Congress expressed the intelligence, determination and unity of the entire Party, people and the armed forces. Delegates discussed and unanimously approved Congress documents, outlining six key tasks and defining key targets to guide the national development over the coming time.

Regarding socio-economic development, the Congress advocated higher and better quality of economic growth that is associated with the target of sustainable development and improvement of labour output; while promoting the role of the market and economic sectors, science-technology and human factor as well as enhancing international economic integration.

In reference to politics, the Congress emphasised the tasks of building a strong and transparent Party, stepping up the fight against corruption and wastefulness, upholding democracy in the society and ensuring human rights, in association with perfecting the socialist rule-of-law State in accordance with the 2013 Constitution.

In regards to external relations, the Congress agreed to continue the consistent implementation of diplomatic policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, co-operation and development; multilateralisation and diversification of external relations; proactive and active international integration; being a friend, trustworthy partner and responsible member of the international community; improvement of the effectiveness of external activities.

Quan informed diplomatic corps and international organisations in Vietnam about the outcomes of the election for the Party leadership bodies for the 12th tenure. He said that the process of nominations, withdrawals and election at the Congress were held democratically by a secret ballot.

Quan also expressed his thanks to international Parties, organisations and friends that conveyed 248 congratulatory letters and messages to the 12th National Congress of the CPV. He emphasised that this is of great inspiration and encouragement for the Congress and a symbol of deepened ties between the CPV and foreign political parties, organisations and friends around the world.
