Poland started off strongly, with Robert Lewandowski opening the scoring after two minutes of play.
It was Lewandowski’s first goal of Euro 2016, which gifted Poland a perfect start to their campaign for the semifinal ticket.
After the early goal, Portugal pushed up to equalise. In the 33rd minute, young talent Renato Sanches delivered an outstanding performance to level the score.
The 18-year-old midfielder received Nani's cutback from the right side of the field, striking the ball which deflected off Grzegorz Krychowiak and getting past goalkeeper Fabianski.
The remaining minutes saw Ronaldo miss a number of opportunities to seal a victory for Portugal.
With neither team able to score again, the match went into a penalty shoot-out. Ronaldo created a premise for Portugal’s aggregate win with a successful opening kick on goal.
The following Portuguese players, including Sanches, Joao Moutinho, Nani and Quaresma were also successful, while Blaszczykowski failed to beat Portuguese keeper Rui Patricio, thus handing the semifinal ticket to Portugal.
Portugal’s semifinal opponent will be the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Belgium and Wales.
