Taekwondo martial artist wins Vietnam’s eighth Tokyo 2020 ticket

Female Taekwondo martial artist Truong Thi Kim Tuyen has successfully secured another ticket to the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games for Vietnamese sports.

Tuyen and her teammates are competing at the ongoing Asian Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020 being held in Amman, Jordan.

Convincing victories against rivals from Pakistan and Kazakhstan in the women's 49 kg class on the first day of the tournament yesterday helped the Vietnamese woman secured a bronze medal in her event, thus booking a slot at the Summer Olympics scheduled to kick off late July.

Tuyen’s teammate Tran Thi Anh Tuyet, who won a gold medal at the 30th South East Asian Games in 2019, will compete in the women's 57 kg category today May 22.

The qualifiers take place from May 21 to 23, bringing together 84 martial artists from 28 countries and territories.

The Southeast Asia region has four countries sending athletes to the event, including Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Each country is allowed compete in two of the four men's weight classes, as well as two of the four women's weight events.

Tuyen and Tuyet are the only Vietnamese representatives at the tournament in Jordan.

Prior to Tuyen, seven other Vietnamese athletes had already booked their places at the upcoming Tokyo Games, namely swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, gymnasts Le Thanh Tung and Dinh Phuong Thanh, archers Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu and Do Thi Anh Nguyet, boxer Nguyen Van Duong, and rowers Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao.
