The annual tournament features the attendance of most of the country’s prominent chess masters, who are competing for individual and team medals in the men’s and women’s rapid and blitz chess categories.
Truong Son is hoped to interrupt Quang Liem’s national rapid chess title defence this year, with his spirit inspired by the latest victory over Liem at the recent 2014 HDBank Cup International Open Chess Tournament, which gave him to the overall crown.
Regarding the men’s blitz category, Son is also one of the toughest challengers, besides defending Hanoian champion Nguyen Van Huy, that Liem will have to conquer if he wants to walk away with the 2014 trophy.
At last year’s competition, Liem was held to a draw by Son in their last blitz game, which forced him to unexpectedly lose the overall title to Van Huy, who enjoyed better sub-indexes.
The eight-day event aims to select worthy players for the national chess team in preparation for the 2014 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from June 15-21.
