Vietnamese women crowned VTV Volleyball Cup champions

Nhan Dan Online - The Vietnam women's national volleyball team beat Thailand 3-1 in a tense final match on Saturday to seal the championship title of the 2014 VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup.

The homeground advantage encouraged the Vietnamese women to play comfortably and claim the first set with a score of 25-23.

The second set witnessed a strong counter-attack from the guests who surged ahead and finished the set 29-27, to restore parity.

The home side displayed an excellent competitive spirit and bravery in the remainder of the match, fighting back to dominate Thailand 27-25 in their third game, before stirring up the atmosphere at the Bac Ninh provincial gymnasium with a decisive fourth-set victory.

In another game the same day, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) team overcame Kazakhstan 3-0 to take third place at this year's competition.

As the overall winners, Vietnam walked away with US$10,000 in prize money, while runners-up Thailand and third-placed team DPRK received US$7,000 and US$5,000, respectively.

The eight-day event brought together six teams from Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, the DPRK, Kazakhstan and China, playing in a round-robin qualification tournament with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
