Vietnamese Kata queen wins Premier League gold medal in Istanbul

Nhan Dan Online – Vietnam’s Kata queen, Nguyen Hoang Ngan, had an excellent rehearsal for the upcoming 17th Asian Games in the Republic of Korea as she took the women’s individual Kata gold medal at the Karate1 Premier League - Istanbul 2014 in Turkey on September 7.

Hoang Ngan, aged 30, won absolute victory, 5-0, against Italian Terryana D'Onofrio in their final match with a superior performance. It was Ngan’s second gold won at a Karate1 Premier League competition, following her first in Hanau, German in 2012.

2008 world champion Ngan opened her campaign with a narrow 3-2 win over Hong Kong’s Lau Mo Sheung before addressing challenges from Switzerland’s Mark Melinda, Turkey’s Discl Kruba and Sweden’s Wagiund Lina with the same score of 5-0.

Ngan then claimed a 3-2 victory in the semifinals against France’s Sandy Scordo, who had finished in top three at the 12th European Karate Championships for Regions held in Izmir, Turkey three months ago.

The 2014 Istanbul competition took place at Asli Cakir Alptekin Sports Hall from September 6-7, with the participation of nearly 600 karatekas representing 52 countries and territories around the world.

Vietnam ended up in seventh place with one gold medal, while host Turkey ranked first overall, bagging four gold and one silver medal.
