Kien Quoc, a veteran Khanh Hoa player, produced a spectacular resumption to the men’s singles reigning position by handling Le Tien Dat from the Army team 4-3 (12/10, 4/11, 11/3, 8/11, 7/11, 11/6, 12/10) in a dramatic final clash on Wednesday evening.

The convincing victory enabled Kien Quoc to reclaim his men’s singles crown which he had lost at the hands of another Army player, Duong Van Nam as a result of his bitter 1-4 defeat in the final match of last year’s event.

There was no surprise made in the women’s singles category as Mai Hoang My Trang, of Petrosetco Ho Chi Minh City, easily crushed Tien Giang’s Pham Thi Thien Kim in four straight sets (11/7, 11/6, 11/3, 11/5) and successfully defended her national championship title.

The People’s Public Security team wrapped up their five-day campaign with 2.5 gold medals (won in the women’s doubles, women’s team and mixed doubles disciplines), and three bronze medals (women’s singles, and men’s team).

Petrosetco HCM City came in second with 1.5 gold (women’s singles and mixed doubles), three silver medals (men’s doubles, women’s doubles and men’s team), and two bronze medals (men’s doubles and women’s team). The third-place position went to the Army team with one gold (men’s doubles), two silver (women’s team and men’s singles) and three bronze medals (women’s doubles and mixed doubles).

Addressing the Wednesday closing ceremony, Nhan Dan Newspaper Deputy Editor-in-chief and head of the tournament’s steering board, Le Quoc Khanh, congratulated the athletes and praised their battling spirit during their five-day fierce competition, while also sending deep thanks to the PetroVietnam Ca Mau Fertiliser Company Limited for its effective sponsorship.

The organising board awarded trophies, medals and prize money to the winners and presented prizes to two promising young male and female players, Dinh Anh Hoang of Hanoi T&T, and Pham Thi Thu Huong of Hanoi.
