Incheon 2014: flag-raising ceremony welcomes Vietnamese athletes

Nhan Dan Online - A flag-raising ceremony was held on September 17 morning at the athletes’ village in Incheon, the Republic of Korea (ROK), to welcome the Vietnamese team taking part in the 17th Asian Games.

The ceremony was attended by about 70 Vietnamese athletes, coaches and officials.

Vietnam will send a 298-member delegation to the 17th Asian Games, with 199 athletes on 22 teams competing in 21 sports and targeting 2-4 gold medals.

The country’s golden hopes are pinned on Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Phan Thi Ha Thanh (gymnastics), Thach Kim Tuan (weightlifting) and Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting).

The same morning, national flags of Iraq, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Brunei were also raised to welcome athletes from those countries.

According to Yonhap, the torch for the 17th Asian Games arrived in the host city on Wednesday after a 36-day relay throughout some 17 cities in the ROK. The Games are scheduled to open on September 19.

About 14,500 athletes and officials from 45 Asian countries are expected in Incheon for the 16-day competition which will feature 439 disciplines in 36 sports.
