ABG Day 5: Athletics safeguard Vietnam’s top position

Vietnam continued to dominate the ABG 5 rankings on September 29 with three additional gold medals won in athletics.

In the men’s triple jump event, Nguyen Van Hung secured gold for Vietnam with a total distance of 16.63m, 82cm farther than the silver medalist from Thailand.

Pham Thi Hue won a second gold after finishing first in the women’s cross country individual final with a time of 13:56.29.

Vietnam’s third gold of the day was won in the women’s cross country team event.

With five gold, six silver and three bronze medals, the Vietnamese athletics team surpassed the gold medal target set before the Games and led the overall medal tally in the sport after five days of competition.

On the same day, Vietnam took silver in the women’s cross country individual event and two other bronzes in the men’s fairway team event (woodball) and the women’s tanding 45-50kg category (pencak silat).

As of 9.30pm on September 29, Vietnam remained on top of the ABG tally with 31 gold, 26 silver and 31 bronze medals, followed by Thailand with 27 golds and China with ten.
