Vien completed the race in a time of 1:59.24, which surpassed her own record of 1:59.27 set at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore.
The Saturday victory helped Vien to repeat the same miracle as in Singapore two years ago, when she pocketed a collection of eight individual gold medals.
Earlier, the Can Tho-born swimmer was crowned champion in the women’s 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 400m freestyle, 200m medley, 800m freestyle, 400m medley and 50m backstroke categories.
Together with Vien’s brilliance, teammate Nguyen Huy Hoang performed impressively in the men’s 1,500m event, taking top honour with a time of 15:20.10, breaking the previous record of 15:31.03 set by his senior Lam Quang Nhat at the 28th Games.
With the two additional titles secured by Anh Vien and Huy Hoang, Vietnam’s swimming team left the 29th SEA Games with an overall tally of 10 individual golds – eight by Anh Vien, one by Nguyen Huu Kim Son and one by Huy Hoang.
Foursome Nguyen Thi Oanh, Quach Thi Lan, Hoang Thi Ngoc va Nguyen Thi Huyen brought home the 17th gold medal for Vietnamese track and field in Kuala Lumpur by claiming the women’s 4x400m relay title with a time of 3:33.38, above Thailand (3:38.95) and Malaysia (3:43.31).
The Vietnamese table tennis team secured the first SEA Games gold medal after eight years after Dinh Quang Linh, Nguyen Anh Tu and Doan Ba Tuan Anh beat their Singaporean opponents 3-1 in the men’s team final match.
Concluding the seventh official day of competition, Vietnam surpassed the 50 gold medal mark, standing at second place on the medal standings with 51 golds.
