Vietnamese player wins gold medal at ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships

Vietnam's chess prodigy Nguyen Anh Khoi won the gold medal in the standard chess category at the 2019 ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships which is taking place from June 10-18 in Mandalay, Myanmar.

At this tournament, the 17-year-old player Nguyen Anh Khoi competed in the U20 age group with Elo an rating of 2,507 and was seeded No 1.

He displayed his superiority by winning eight out of nine games to lift the overall trophy with a total of 8.5 points. He was followed by Miciano John Marvin from the Philippines and his teammate Tran Minh Thang.

Khoi will continue to play at rapid and blitz chess divisions,while still having the opportunity to complete his gold medal hattrick at the tournament.

In addition, world U8 champion Nguyen Le Cam Hien impressively bagged a gold medal at the women’s U12 chess competition.

Vietnamese delegation also brought home an additional nine gold medals at the men’s U6, U8, U10, U12 and U16 categories as well as women’s U10, U14, U16 and U20 events.

The ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships featured the participation of 431 players from nine countries: Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
