Rodriguez header secures win for Argentina against Uruguay

A first half goal from Guido Rodriguez, his first in 11 international appearances, gave Argentina a 1-0 win over Uruguay in a leaden Copa America clash on Saturday (June 19).

Argentina move into joint top spot with four points alongside Chile, who beat Bolivia 1-0 earlier on Friday. Paraguay have three points from one game.

* Chile secured a 1-0 win over Bolivia with a goal from English-born striker Ben Brereton in their Copa America clash on Friday. Brereton, making his first start for the country of his mother's birth, scored after 10 minutes when he slotted the ball home from 15 metres to complete a swift counter attack.

* Top seed Matteo Berrettini saw off a spirited challenge from home favourite Dan Evans to win 7-6(5) 6-3 and reach the semi-finals of the Queen's Club championships on Friday. Italian Berrettini, who reached his third ATP Tour semi on grass, will face Australian fourth seed Alex de Minaur who fought back to beat big-serving Croat Marin Cilic 3-6 6-3 6-4.

* Former Germany and United States coach Juergen Klinsmann said he is interested in the vacant managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur and had even called club chairman Daniel Levy after he sacked Jose Mourinho. Klinsmann, 56, was a World Cup winner as a player with West Germany and had two spells playing for Tottenham in the 1990s.

* MotoGP announced on Friday the retirement of Jason Dupasquier's race number after the Swiss Moto3 rider died in a crash at Italy's Mugello circuit last month. The number 50 was retired in a ceremony ahead of the weekend's German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, with a trophy presented to his team.

* Spain captain Sergio Busquets could play against Poland on Saturday despite only just returning to the squad after 12 days in quarantine, coach Luis Enrique said. Busquets tested positive for COVID-19 on June 6 at Spain's training camp and was sent back home to Barcelona, although he kept training on an individual basis as he was asymptomatic.

* Captain Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Axel Witsel will all start Belgium's next European Championship match against Finland in St Petersburg on Monday, coach Roberto Martinez said. The trio all battled with injury ahead of the tournament but showed their value to Belgium's cause in Thursday's 2-1 win over Denmark, coming on to turn around the team’s fortunes after Belgium had trailed at half-time in Copenhagen.

* Ineos Grenadiers chief Dave Brailsford promised an aggressive strategy at the Tour de France after the British team named its line-up for the race on Friday. Last year's surprise Giro d'Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart will make his Tour de France debut while 2018 champion Geraint Thomas is also in the eight-man squad.

* Esteban Ocon has no exit clause in his new three-year contract with Alpine that would allow him to switch to Mercedes, the Formula One team's boss Laurent Rossi said on Friday. The 24-year-old Frenchman is managed by Mercedes and served as that team's reserve driver before joining Renault-owned Alpine.

* Fourth seed Andrey Rublev moved into the semi-finals of a grasscourt tournament for the first time in his career after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(4) 6-2 at the ATP Tour 500 event in Halle on Friday. Rublev, 23, is the only seed left in the tournament after other top seeds Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer made early exits.

* Granada have appointed former Spain coach Robert Moreno as their new head coach, the La Liga side said on Friday. Moreno was an assistant to current Spain coach Luis Enrique at AS Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona before joining the national team in 2018. He became acting head coach in March 2019 when Luis Enrique temporarily stepped aside after his daughter was diagnosed with cancer.

* Valtteri Bottas led Formula One world champion team mate Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two in first practice for the French Grand Prix at Le Castellet on Friday. Bottas topped the timesheets in one minute 33.448 seconds, with Hamilton 0.335 slower and Red Bull's championship leader Max Verstappen third with a lap of 1:33.880 and Azerbaijan GP-winning team mate Sergio Perez fourth.

* UEFA has a contingency plan to replace Wembley as host stadium of the Euro 2020 final unless Britain agrees to exempt travelling foreign fans from 10-day quarantine rules, the European football governing body said on Friday. Tournament organisers have been in negotiations with the United Kingdom government since it postponed plans to end COVID-19 restrictions on Jun 21.

* Juventus honorary chairman and former Italy forward Giampiero Boniperti died aged 92 due to heart failure, Italian media reported on Friday. Boniperti played for Juventus from 1946-1961, winning five Serie A and two Coppa Italia titles with the club.
