Olympics: Ariarne Titmus stuns Katie Ledecky to win women’s 400m freestyle title

Australia’s Ariarne Titmus overhauls defending champion Katie Ledecky to secure the women’s 400m freestyle gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on July 26.

Ledecky was the leader at the halfway stage, but the Australian overtook the American at the 350m mark.

Ledecky pushed hard in the final 50 metres to no avail and Titmus won in a time of 3:56.69, a new Oceania record.

LI Bingjie of People’s Republic of China took the bronze in an Asian record of 4:01.08.

Kristian Blummenfelt wins men’s triathlon Olympic gold

After a false start to the race, Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt won the men’s triathlon Olympic gold medal following a three-way battle for the title.

The Norwegian, who was in fifth position after the 1,500m swim and 40km cycle legs, finished in a time of one hour, 45 minutes and four seconds.

Blummenfelt's win gives Norway its first Olympic gold medal since the Olympic Games London 2012, when they won gold in handball and canoe sprint. He is also the first person representing Norway to win a medal in triathlon at the Olympic Games.

Behind him, Alex Yee of Great Britain won the silver in the Tokyo 2020 swim-bike-run event for Great Britain's sixth Olympic medal in triathlon, while New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde claimed the bronze for New Zealand first medal of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Canada’s Margaret MacNeil clinched Canada’s first gold at Tokyo 2020 after being crowned the fastest in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 55.59, which is a new Americas continental record.

MacNeil took the top honour ahead of China’s Zhang Yufei, who claimed silver with a time of 55.64, and Australia’s Emma McKeon who took bronze (55.72). World record holder and defending champion Sarah Sjoestroem finished seventh

Adam Peaty wins men's breaststroke 100 final and claims Team GB's first Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020

Great Britain's Adam Peaty took the spotlight again today and stormed to gold in the men's 100m breaststroke final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

The athlete dominated the event from start to finish and clocked in at 57.37 seconds.

Not only did he top the podium, the 26-year-old has become the first British swimmer in history to retain an Olympic title whilst also achieving the fifth fastest record in history.

Meanwhile, Arno Kamminga from the Netherlands, who was Peaty's fiercest rival for the 100m breaststroke crown, came in second after touching the wall at 58.00 seconds. Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi came in third place at 58.33.

USA retain the 4x100m men's freestyle Olympic gold.

Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowen Becker and Zach Apple hold off a spirited Italy to win 10th Olympic gold in men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

The quartet finished in a time of 3:08.97 seconds, just 0.73 outside the world record.

Italy took silver, 1.14 seconds behind the winners, while Australia came in third for the bronze.

Japan's Naomi Osaka has recorded her second straight-sets victory of the Olympic tournament, defeating Viktorija Golubic (SUI) 6–3 6–2 to move on to the third round.

Also through is another former major winner, Garbiñe Muguruza (Spain), who beat Wang Qiang (China) 6–3 6–0.
