Olympics: Alexander Zverev wins gold in men's singles tennis

German tennis star Alexander Zverev was crowned the men’s singles Olympic champion after comfortably defeating Karen Khachanov of Team ROC 6-3 6-1 in the title match at Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo, Japan on August 1.

The 24-year-old had already stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia who was aiming for a Golden Slam – all four singles Grand Slams, plus the Olympic Games, in one year – in the semifinal, winning 1-6 6-3 6-1.

The Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova overpowered Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic of Team Switzerland 7-5, 6-1 in the final of the women’s tennis doubles at Ariake Tennis Centre on August 1.

The Czech victory upset Bencic’s hopes of winning both a singles and doubles gold medal at Tokyo 2020. Had she won the doubles match she would have become only the fifth member of an elite group of tennis players to win a singles and a doubles gold medal at one Olympic Games since the sport returned in 1988.

Artistic gymnastics: Artem Dolgopyat wins historic gold for Israel

Israel's Artem Dolgopyat won a historic gold medal in artistic gymnastics, claiming the men's floor exercise title during the first of four apparatus finals at Tokyo 2020 on Sunday (August 1).

Prior to this, no gymnast from the nation had won an Olympic medal of any colour in the sport and only one other athlete has won gold in Olympic history - Gal Fridman's sailing gold in 2004.

It took a moment for the score and placement to register with Dolgopyat matching the score from Rayderley Zapata of Spain (14.933). The duo had the same execution score, usually the tie-breaker. But the Israeli had a .1 advantage in the difficulty score to win the tie break.

China's Xiao Ruoteng was the bronze medallist at 14.766.

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade soars to women's vault gold

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade soared to the women's vault gold medal in the first day of apparatus finals for artistic gymnastics at Tokyo 2020 on August 1.

Andrade's 15.083 held off Team USA’s MyKayla Skinner, who averaged 14.916. Republic of Korea’s YEO Seojeong was the bronze medallist at 14.733.

Max Whitlock defends Rio gold medal in the men's pommel horse

Team GB's Max Whitlock retained his Olympic title on the pommel horse Sunday (August 1), besting rival Lee Chih-kai of Taiwan (China), 15.583 to 15.400.

Whitlock is the first man in 41 years to repeat as Olympic champion on the event, after Zoltan Magyar won in 1976 and 1980. Japan's Kaya Kazuma was the bronze medallist, scoring 14.900.

From the first round to the last, China’s Shi Tingmao led the 12 divers in the Olympic 3m springboard final to win her second consecutive gold medal in this event, with a score of 383.50, and fourth Olympic gold medal across two Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old also won gold in Tokyo in the synchronised event with compatriot Wang Han – the silver medallist in this event (348.75) – as well as double gold in the same disciplines at Rio 2016.

The USA's Krysta Palmer performed her hardest dive of the competition, a forward 2.5 somersault with two twists, which received a score of 73.10 in the final round and a double thumbs up from the US diver, who just beat Malaysia's Nur Dhabitah Sabri to the podium with a score of 343.75 to Nur’s 326.15.

Golf: Xander Schauffele of Team USA wins gold in men's individual stroke play

Xander Schauffele of the US won the Olympic men's individual stroke play competition after four rounds of action saw him finish on -18. The 27-year-old Californian ended the gold medal hopes of Slovakia's Rory Sabbatini with a nerve-free final putt, with the latter ending the final round on -17.

Schauffele was tied for the lead with Sabbatini with two holes to play. The American made birdie from 6 feet on the 17th hole to regain the lead. Then after a bad tee shot that forced him to play short of the water, he hit wedge to 4 feet and made the par to win.

Sabbatini set an Olympic record with a 61 to won the silver. C.T. Pan of Taiwan (China), who closed with a 63, won the bronze in the playoff among seven countries that lasted four holes.

Sailing: Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom wins gold in women's laser radial

Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom cruised to Olympic gold in the women's one person dinghy laser radial event at Enoshima Yacht Harbour on August 1.

Despite finishing at seventh in the medal race, the Danish had sailed away with 78 net points in total to clinch gold in her second Olympic Games. This is the first Olympic gold medal for Rindom who already has a bronze from Rio 2016 in the same event.

Sweden's Josefin Olsson who crossed the finish line first took silver at 81 points whilst the Netherlands Marit Bouwmeester managed to climbed back to third place and win bronze. Marit now has three Olympic medals in her trophy cabinet - with a silver at London 2012 and gold at Rio 2016.

Matt Wearn wins gold in men's one person dinghy laser for Australia

Matt Wearn took gold in the men’s one person laser event at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on August 1. The Australian sailor finished in second place in the medal race, scoring four points, which were enough for him to take the title.

The medal race at Enoshima Yacht Harbour was won by Jean Baptiste Bernaz of France, but his total score of 92 meant that he finished in sixth place overall.

Wearn scored a total of 53 points overall, while Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic, who finished fourth in the medal race, scoring eight points, took take the silver medal with 82 points. Hermann Tomasgaard scored 85 to clinch the bronze, giving Norway its first medal in sailing since 2004.
