World number six women's doubles pair Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu beat China's number four seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan 21-19 21-15 in the final this morning to win the country’s first Olympic gold medal in women's doubles, and also Indonesia’s first gold at Tokyo 2020.

This achievement helps lift Indonesia to 35th place in the medal tally with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, the best ASEAN team result at Tokyo 2020 so far.

It is also Indonesia's 8th gold medal at Olympics, all of them have been brought home by their badminton teams.

Indonesia, a nation traditionally strong in badminton, have never won a gold medal in women's doubles, an event China always previously excelled in.

Indonesia now becomes the third sports delegation from Southeast Asia to win a gold medal at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Previously, female martial artist Panipak Wongpattanakit of Thailand brought home a gold medal in the women’s 49kg event, while weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the first ever Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in the women's 55kg weightlifting event.
