Paralympics: Singapore’s Yip Pin Xiu wins gold in women’s 50m backstroke S2 event

Singapore's Yip Pin Xiu won gold in the women’s 50m backstroke S2 final at the Tokyo Paralympics on Thursday (Sep 2).

She clocked a time of 1:02.04 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, successfully defending the title she won in Rio in 2016. Yip finished her Tokyo campaign with two gold medals, having successfully defended her title in the 100m backstroke S2 event last week.

China’s Jian Yuyan demolished the world record by eight-seconds in the final of the women's 400m freestyle S6, setting a new time of 5:04.57 to win gold - her third medal of Tokyo 2020. It came after she beat the Paralympic Record in the morning session.

After beating his own world record in the heated this morning, Will Martin did it again in the final. In his Paralympic debut, the Australian swimmer picked up his third gold medal with a time of 57.19 in the men's 100m butterfly S9.

Maksym Krypak broke his own world record to claim gold in the men's 100m backstroke after touching the wall with a time of 57.19. This is Krypak’s fourth gold medal at Tokyo 2020 and also the 14th Paralympic medal for the 26-year-old Ukrainian swimmer. With one more race to go in the men's 200m individual medley, he’s got one more chance to bring up his tally to 15 medals.

Brazilian swimmer Gabriel Gerardo dos Santos Araujo rounded up his Tokyo 2020 campaign by clinching gold in the men's 50m backstroke S2 on Thursday afternoon. The 19-year-old, who was born with shortened limbs, made his Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020 and won three medals in total: two gold medals (200m freestyle S2, 50m backstroke S2) and one silver in men's 100m backstroke.

Shooting

China’s Huang Xing claimed gold in the mixed 25m pistol SH1 event at Asaka Shooting Range on September 2, shooting a final score of 27 which is also a Paralympic record. Meanwhile Poland's Szymon Sowinski won silver with a total score of 21, followed by Ukraine's Olekseii Denysiuk with 20.

This is Huang's second Paralympic title after also winning the same event back at Rio 2016.

Cycling road

Italy's Paolo Cecchetto, Luca Mazzone and Diego Colombari all blasted through the road race H1-5 team relay finals at Fuji Speedway International. Italy clocked in a total time of 52:32 and only beat the French team by 31 seconds and the USA by 39 seconds.

Chen Jianxin (China) and Jana Majunke (Germany) were the other two gold medallists on Thursday afternoon as they finished supreme in the men’s T1-2 and women’s T1-2 road race events, respectively.
