The AFC recently ran an article on its website (the-afc.com) touching upon eight key players to look out for across the 11 qualifying groups, with Van Toan being the only goalkeeper named.

“Goalkeeper Nguyen Van Toan is so highly rated in his homeland that he was handed the number one jersey for Vietnam’s recent AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to Qatar match against Oman,” the article said.

It stated that with the regular first choice Dang Van Lam out due to injury, the 21-year-old Hai Phong keeper will look to hold down the position. “With senior team head coach Park Hang-seo also helming the U-23 side, Van Toan will have further chances to impress in the games ahead.”

Vietnam U23s will kick-start their qualifying campaign this October 27 with a clash against Chinese Taipei before taking on Myanmar on November 2.

Alongside Van Toan, the AFC’s “Ones to Watch” for the U23 Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers include Khalid Al Ghannam (Saudi Arabia), Yuta Goke (Japan), Khusain Norchaev (Uzbekistan), Ali Saleh (United Arab Emirates), Choi Jun (Republic of Korea), Amirali Sadeghi (Iran), and Manuchehr Safarov (Tajikistan).
