Nhan Dan Newspaper Table Tennis Championships kick off in Quang Nam

The 39th National Nhan Dan Newspaper Table Tennis Championships – PetroVietnam Cup 2021 kicked off at the Quang Nam Provincial Gymnasium on November 30.

The week-long event, held jointly by Nhan Dan Newspaper, the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation and the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has brought together 110 players from 11 teams across the country.

They are competing for seven sets of medals in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, and team events, with a total prize value of 350 million VND (15,000 USD).

Addressing the event, Que Dinh Nguyen, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper stressed that since it was first launched in 1983, the tournament has contributed to the development of Vietnam’s high-performance sports and table tennis in particular while promoting the sport movement among the people towards better health.

This year’s event will help the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation to seek out and select the best players for the upcoming 31st SEA Games and international tourneys in 2022, he stated.

Director of the Quang Nam Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Thanh Hong said that by the event provides local spectators with the opportunity to watch exciting games.

He also emphasised that by hosting the event, Quang Nam has proven its efforts and achievements in containing COVID-19 pandemic, following Prime Minister’s temporary guideline on safely and flexibly adapting to and effectively controlling the pandemic.

At the opening ceremony, player Nguyen Thi Mai Phuong and chief umpire To Duc Hoa took oaths to respect and abide by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship.
