Oanh lived up to high expectations finishing first in the women’s 100m sprint with a time of 11.81 seconds, far passing her SEA Games personal best of 12.02 seconds.

Oanh is considered a worthy successor to ‘speed queen’ Vu Thi Huong in the 100m and 200m sprints. She was the most outstanding performer at the recent 2015 National Youth Athletics Championships, winning six golds and one silver in addition to breaking four youth records.

Oanh’s teammate Le Thi Mong Tuyen snatched an additional bronze in the same category, clocking a time of 11.92 seconds.

Vietnam’s second gold medal of the day was secured by Bui Thu Thao in the women’s long jump. Thao cleared 6.48 metres, 0.44 metre farther than that of Japanese silver medalist, Chie Kiriyama.

Nguyen Van Cong contributed a silver to Vietnam’s tally with 7.59 metres in the men’s long jump, while Nguyen Thanh Nhan added another bronze in the men’s high jump with 2.08 metres.

The Thailand Open tournament is taking place from September 6 to 9; Vietnam has sent a team of eight athletes to compete.
