Team events kickstart national table tennis champs

The 33rd Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championships - PetroVietnam Cup 2015 officially opened in Can Tho city on September 7 with the men’s and women’s team events.

The T&T men’s team recorded a convincing 3-1 victory over Khanh Hoa thanks to veteran player Tran Tuan Quynh’s shining performance.

Quynh won the first game 3-2 against Ly Tieu Lan before claiming the decisive victory 3-1 over Doan Kien Quoc to secure T&T’s overall win.

Meanwhile, with two consecutive defeats to Nguyen Ngoc Tu and Tran Tuan Quynh, Doan Kien Quoc of Khanh Hoa is expected to face numerous challenges on his way to defending his men’s singles title at this year’s event.

In other matches, the Public Security team beat Hai Duong 2 with a score of 3-1; Hanoi finished off Ca Mau 3-0; and Ho Chi Minh City overcame Can Tho 3-0.

On the women’s side, Long An surprisingly beat Tien Giang 3-2; while Dong Nai, HCM City and HCM City Petrosetco recorded respective 3-0 wins against Vinh Long 2, Tay Ninh and T&T.

The annual competition is taking place from September 7 to 13 with the participation of nearly 140 players on 16 teams.

Players are battling it out for medals in seven events: the men’s and women’s singles, doubles and team disciplines and the mixed doubles category, with the seeding in each category based on the 2014 results.

Those who stand out in this tournament will be selected for the national teams in preparation for the 2015 Asian Championships scheduled for this October.
